ADC Kentrox CopperSMART 396 is
another long-discontinued piece of unobtainium SDSL CPE which at first
appears to be an SDSL DSU
similar to Larscom CupreDSU.
However, it was actually a smart DSU
that is not
totally bit-transparent.
It was specifically for the Frame Relay encapsulation and implemented
advanced monitoring functions.
The CopperSMART was smart
to the point of having an Ethernet
port with an IP address assigned to it! But it was still a DSU
rather
than a router, as the Ethernet port stayed out of the main data path and
was only for O&M.
A product with this functionality caters to a rather special market and
does not particularly appeal to me.
I would also bet that ADC Kentrox had originally invented something similar
for traditional [F]T1 applications, and that it is not an SDSL-ism.
It certainly does not fill the need for a
plain vanilla DSU
for SDSL — that role is left to the
XSB-2000 and our
OSDCU.
